Minutes: ITMC Meeting on February 24, 2000
The ITMC Meeting was held in the Wallace Bldg Auditorium at 1:00pm
The meeting was chaired by Leon Schwartz

2. ITS Update – Rich Varn & ITS Staff
Linda Plazak spoke on data warehousing. Linda wants to talk to the agencies about their objectives & goals to facilitate the budget process.
ITS is now offering server farm & LAN services. These services will be defined
on the state Intranet next week.

Rich spoke about pending legislation concerning the creation of an Information Technology Department. SSB 3197 (Senate study bill) does not incorporate the ICN, and leaves out the ITMC.
There has been an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) group formed. This group will participate in a conference call on March 3, 2000 with the Gartner group to discuss ERP issues.
No ICN report was given.
4. Storage Area Networks-Doug Kern
ITS is researching Storage Area Networking (SAN) technology as a means of providing increased efficiency and capabilities for storage resources in ITS and across the enterprise.
ITS has formed a SAN team to explore opportunities to utilize this technology.
In order to gain more information about SAN’s, a 2.5 day seminar by the Evaluator Group was conducted for the team.
An RFI was subsequently developed and sent to numerous vendors to gain more insight into current and future vendor offerings.
RFI response deadline is March 17, 2000.
Following review of the RFI’s, an RFP will be developed to establish a contract for products and services to enable development of SAN technology within the enterprise.
5. IT Assessment Project
Scott Strachan from RSM McGladrey provided an update on the Enterprise Technology Assessment project.
This assessment is aimed at identifying the current state of information technology infrastructure across the enterprise, current technology dollar expenditures, and additional technology requirements needed to achieve optimum effectiveness for enterprise business operations.
In addition, the state of Iowa’s IT expenditures will be benchmarked against those of states of comparable size.
Any gaps will be identified and appropriate dollar amounts needed to fill those gaps will be computed.
The final report will be issued shortly.
6. Public Key Infrastructure – Kip Peters
Public Key Infrastructure allows you to focus on cryptography. The important pieces to a PKI are policies, procedures, and equipment.
The point here is that policies and procedures are extremely critical to the successful implementation of a PKI, the technology is the easy part.
Last item: We are going to develop a vulnerability assessment capability-assessments to follow.
